One Million People Sign Petition To Stop Donald Trump Visiting UK
One million British people have signed a petition asking their government not to allow US President Donald Trump to visit the UK. Trump announced that he intended to visit the United Kingdom during a visit to Washington by British Prime Minister Theresa May.
The online petition against Donald Trump‘s proposed state visit to the UK comes in response to the new administration’s travel ban on citizens of seven middle eastern countries. The so-called ‘extreme vetting’ has caused chaos at airports and prompted protests across the country.
“Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government,” the petition says.”But he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.”
The petition does not seek to deny Trump entry to the the UK but it does not want the British government to honor him with a state visits. State visits to the UK by foreign heads of state usually involve a lavish state dinner, formal speeches, troop reviews and a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.
The leader of the opposition Labour Party has called on the government to postpone any visit, while the prime minister was widely criticized for initially refusing to condemn Trump’s new travel ban.
