Trump Joins Texas Lawsuit Aimed at Throwing Out Millions of Votes

President Donald Trump has filed to intervene in a lawsuit brought by the attorney general of Texas which aims to throw out millions of votes in states won by President-elect Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. The suit appears unlikely to succeed.

Ken Paxton, the state’s Republican AG, has filed suit with the U.S. Supreme Court asking it to instruct state legislatures in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to invalidate their election results, which have been certified, and select their own slate of presidential electors who will vote for Trump when the Electoral College meets on December 13. This would effectively throw out millions of votes.

“We will be INTERVENING in the Texas (plus many other states) case. This is the big one. Our Country needs a victory,” Trump said on Twitter, announcing the move that was widely expected but unlikely to affect the case’s chances.

At least 17 states that backed Trump in the election have signed on to the case, which legal experts have derided as a “publicity stunt” that the Supreme Court will refuse to hear. Critics on the left and the right have charged that Texas does not have standing to sue other states about their election procedures in this way.

The court recently rejected an attempt to overturn the election results in Pennsylvania in a one-sentence ruling from Justice Samuel Alito. The Trump campaign and other Republicans have had no success in legal challenges to the election results so far.
