Bill Weld Calls Trump ‘A Raging Racist’ As He Tries To Challenge Him For GOP Nomination
Bill Weld is still trying to challenge President Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. Though he’s very unlikely to make much impact, Weld has continued to attack Trump is stark terms – often using stronger language than the President’s Democratic critics.
“Donald Trump is a raging racist, OK?” Weld said at an NAACP event. “He’s a complete and thoroughgoing racist. And he made that choice, a choice a long time ago, when he was engaged in the housing business in New York with his father.”
“The national Republican Party has a choice. And a lot of them like to think that it’s a political choice. But it’s not a political choice. It’s a moral choice.”
“Unless the Republican Party in Washington expressly, expressly rejects the racism of Donald Trump, they’re going to come to be universally viewed as the party of racism in America,” Weld said.
Weld, who was the Libertarian candidate for vice president in 2016, has yet to make much traction in his quest to challenge Trump. Sitting presidents can suffer damaging primary contests, however. The most recent was George HW Bush, whose re-election campaign was damaged by a challenge from Pat Buchanan.
Whether Weld will gain enough momentum to force a serious contest for the GOP nomination is a matter of speculation. But if he continues denouncing the President, he may garner more media attention.
