As Democrats Debated, Trump Made An ‘Incoherent’ Speech Attacking The Clean Waters Act
Democratic presidential candidates took to the debate stage on Thursday night in the latest round of their 2020 race, but President Donald Trump was in California at the House Republican retreat. While the Democrats argued policy and attacked him, Trump was being Trump.
In what Vox’s Aaran Rupar described as an ‘incoherent’ speech, the President criticized the Clean Waters Act, which he’s rolling back, and promised a tax cut for the middle class. He’s promised that tax cut before but it never materialized.
“We’re now working on a tax cut for middle-income people that is going to be very, very inspirational,” Trump told the crowd of Republican lawmakers. “It’s going to be something that I think it’s what everybody is looking for. We’ll be announcing it sometime in the next year.”
Promising a new tax cut will likely form part of Trump’s re-election bid and he will encourage voters to return the House to the Republicans in order to get it passed. Recent tax cuts disproportionately benefited the wealthiest Americans. Trump went on to attack regulations on water.
“The Clean Waters act didn’t give you clean waters — by the way, today we have the cleanest air, we have the cleanest water that we’ve ever had in the history of our country,” Trump said.
The President also took shots at the Democrats and returned to one of his favorite talking points – MS-13. But the media was paying little attention to Trump on Thursday night. All eyes were on the Democrats. For once, Trump didn’t manage to break through.
