Carly Fiorina: “We Need to Take Back Our Country”
Friday night on Greta Van Susteren’s show On The Record, Carly “I can tell the best lie with a straight face” Fiorina was presented with the now infamous cover of the New York Daily News. On it was splashed the words God Isn’t Fixing This along with a few of the top Republican tweets in response to the latest attack on innocent people in this country by someone with a gun. Her first words in response were, “We have to take our country back.”
No offense here, but who exactly are you going to take it back from, and who are you to be taking it? Aren’t you an American and the other people you supposedly want to take it from are also Americans? Isn’t there supposed to be these things called freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion – which some also feel means a freedom from religion – in this country? Oh yes, they are part of something called the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. Perhaps you should read it sometime before making pronouncements about possibly killing other Americans to “take back” the country.
What’s more galling about this whole interview from here on is that Ms. Susteren lets that comment slide and doesn’t even question the motives behind the Daily News’ front page. Isn’t that what a journalist is supposed to do? Get to and expose the truth? Well, sadly, that isn’t what happened. Carly Fiorina was allowed to basically go on without a single challenge to her statement. What sort of journalist of good conscious does that?
Now, I know a lot of people are rather upset about the Daily News cover, and not without some reason, but maybe they are missing the point. Perhaps a large number of them are getting outraged just for the sake of having something to get angry about. If they thought about this situation beyond the political sphere for just a moment, maybe they would begin to reconsider and understand why the newspaper made such an incendiary cover.
Out here in rural America when the cows are full of milk, the farmer doesn’t pray that God will take of the cows for him or her. They go out and milk them. Same can be said for people living in the city who have to go to work in the morning. You don’t pray that God will lift you up, over that traffic jam, and deposit you safely into the parking lot. Why? Because it just doesn’t make sense to do that. It is a trivial matter, and something we need to do ourselves. Gun control is the same thing. We can prevent a lot of these massacres from happening, we just have to take action to do so instead of just praying and then doing nothing afterward when the bills come before us in the state houses and in Congress.
Before someone gets all upset about me defaming the Almighty here, let me just say I come from a very religious family. I would never mock them or shame them for praying after anything like this. I would hope those who don’t believe in God could do the same for Republicans who do believe prayers will help. It doesn’t matter what you or I believe at that moment. What matters is what happens after the tragedy when the bills to help stop these outrageous acts of violence from recurring reach their desks.
The issue is not prayer it is that it is all the Republicans ever want to do after a tragedy like this one that is happening all too often. They will nash their teeth and rend their garments. They will fall to their knees and pray to their God that they do not understand why this keeps happening. The truth is we know why this happens over and over again. We allow anyone with the money to go and purchase and possess a weapon that is designed for one thing only, to kill people. It can not be used to go hunting it really is not good to use for home defense it is for hunting down and killing people. Outside of the military and special parts of the police force it serves no other purpose. The Supreme Court turned the second amendement on it’s head and declared in what they laughingly called a plain reading of the text that anyone should be able to own any weapons they want and as many as they like, according to the NRA, but it said nothing of the sort. I think the Heller decision was wrong but we are stuck with it but that does not mean we can not pass some basic common sense regulations. Waiting periods to pick up guns a full background check to assure we are not letting felons, terrorists and crazy people have a weapon. Limiting magizine sizes to 10 bullets or even 5 let’s face it if you are such a poor ass shot you need to have a 30, 50 or 100 round clip then you should not be allowed to shoot. The fact that so many politicians are more fearful of the NRA than doing their damn jobs is another problem. Do the work of the American People rather than the bidding of the NRA and we might accept that your prayers are sincere.
