Trump to Unveil ‘Deal of the Century’ Middle East Peace Plan Today
President Donald Trump is set to reveal his Middle East peace plan on Tuesday. In what has been called the ‘Deal of the Century’ in the Israeli press, Trump is expected to announce what he believes will be the final settlement of the contentious Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
However, both Palestinians and Israelis are wary of the plan. Though the details have not been officially announced, elements of the plan have apparently leaked and the reaction has been poor. The President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas is mobilizing his people against it.
Similarly, some Israeli settlers in the West Bank are objecting to parts of the plan favorable to the Palestinians. They have already protested to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and believe Trump’s plan will ‘strangle’ their communities.
Trump’s proposal will reportedly involve a Palestinian state with representation in Jerusalem, sort sort of Palestinian sovereignty over part of that city and the Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank where Israeli settlers now live. The plan seems calculated to anger both communities.
The possibility that Trump could solve the decades-long dispute between Israel and the Palestinians is practically non-existent. The administration has pursued a very pro-Israel policy, alienating Palestinians. However, if the leaks are true, Trump’s plan contains measures Israel cannot support.
