Trump Wanted to Send All Undocumented Immigrants to Guantánamo Bay, Anonymous Author Claims
President Donald Trump wanted to send all undocumented migrants entering the United States to Guantánamo Bay, according to the anonymous author of the book A Warning. The author, who claims to be a senior administration official, claims that Trump wanted to designate all unauthorized migrants entering the country as ‘enemy combatants.’
Guantánamo Bay is used to hold suspected terrorists and has been a source of controversy since the presidency of George W. Bush. Members of Al-Qaeda have been held there and critics have long argued that inmates are denied basic due process rights.
The anonymous author says Trump considered migration across the Mexican border to be ‘the biggest crisis in American history’. However, his idea to label undocumented migrants as enemy combatants received a cool reception.
“Are you fucking kidding me? This is completely batshit,” one State Department official is reported as saying.
“Before the president could make a public case for the concept, officials quashed it,” the author writes.
The designation ‘enemy combatant’ would have allowed the administration to bypass the courts in the same way the Bush administration did. The book calls the idea ‘truly insane, on its face, for America to send migrant children and families to a terrorist prison in Cuba.’
