George Conway Makes First TV Appearance for MSNBC’s Special Impeachment Coverage
George Conway made his first TV appearance ahead of the public impeachment hearings. The conservative lawyer has been a strong critic of President Donald Trump, breaking with his wife Kellyanne Conway, who is Counselor to the President.
Conway has been a prominent Republican voice calling out Trump’s actions but he hasn’t been on any TV coverage until today. Conway’s appearance on MSNBC with Stephanie Ruhle was prompted by Wednesday’s impeachment hearings. Conway will be on MSNBC throughout the proceedings on Wednesday, providing commentary.
Conway was asked how he felt given that so many Republicans don’t see Trump’s actions as wrong.
“I’m horrified. I’m appalled,” Conway said. “And it’s — If you had told me three years ago that it would come to this, I wouldn’t have believed it, because I don’t think — I mean, you could not have imagined — I don’t think I could have imagined a president, any president, engaging in this sort of conduct.”
Conway had some advice for the GOP on dealing with impeachment.
“Well, the case is, take that Republican hat off and look at it neutrally, or look at what you would have done if Donald Trump were a Democrat. Would you be making these ridiculous arguments about process, about — think of the other arguments they’re making,” he said.
“He didn’t know it, or it wasn’t corrupt. He was really talking about corruption. I mean, all of these things that they don’t really believe or couldn’t possibly believe. I mean, would they — if Barack Obama had done this, they’d be out for blood! And they’d be right.”
Conway also explained that he really didn’t want to be on TV but the situation had encouraged him to appear.
“I don’t even, frankly, watch much television news,” he said. “I get my news online mostly. I watch television mostly for sports. And I don’t frankly want to be on television. But with this — I just don’t get why people can’t see this and why people are refusing to see this. It’s appalling to me.”
