Donald Trump Will Announce Supreme Court Pick: Abortion Rights Hang In The Balance
President Donald Trump will announce his pick for the Supreme Court next week. The administration will attempt to fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia during the presidential election campaign. Trump is expected to choose someone with strong conservative leanings.
Trump will meet with Senate leaders to discuss his possible choices. While Republicans are likely to support any choice Trump makes, Democrats will attempt to grill any conservative candidate who may oppose abortion rights, gay rights or protection for civil liberties.
The Trump administration has tried to paint itself as Pro-Life by re-instating a ban on federal funding for NGOs that provide abortion. Trump has also pledged to appoint a Pro-Life justice to the Supreme Court, a move that will please Republicans and conservatives.
If a Pro-Life candidate is added to the Supreme Court, there will almost certainly be a challenge to the landmark decision that found a constitutional right to abortion. Pro-Life campaigners will try to overturn Roe v. Wade and with an anti-choice majority, abortion rights may become a thing of the past.
