Chris Wallace Ain’t Buying What Fox News Is Selling On Transgender Bathroom Laws

Since North Carolina passed HB2 a few weeks ago, Fox News has been busy selling it as a necessary law to stop sexual predators from invading public bathrooms and locker rooms. Of course, the law is really meant to blatantly discriminate against transgender people and create a wedge issue for religious conservatives who hate THE GAYS and think all transgender folks are just men wearing dresses.

Anyway, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace surprisingly took on his own network and the Republican Party for pushing this tripe as anything other than what it is. Speaking to a panel, he pushed back against The Federalist’s Ben Domenech’s assertion that most conservatives who support this law are just doing it because they’re concerned that sex offenders will use transgender protections to attack little girls in bathrooms.

Wallace pulled out PolitiFact’s study that showed that they have been unable to find any instance of anyone – transgender or otherwise — using protections as cover to assault people in public restrooms.

From Media Matter’s transcript of the program:

CHRIS WALLACE (HOST): I want to go back, though, to this issue of the bathrooms and whether it’s a good issue because we actually decided to try to find out whether it is a public safety issue. Whether it is a problem with transgender people misusing bathrooms to prey on others. And here is what the fact checking group PolitiFact found. We, that’s that PolitiFact, haven’t found any instance of criminals convicted of using transgender protections as cover in the United States. Neither have any left wing groups or right wing groups. Which brings me to Charles Krauthammer’s comment which I was quoting to Paul Manafort earlier which is this seems to be a solution in search of a problem.

Welp. I wonder if Wallace will get a long talking to Sunday night. Or if this is just the ‘Fair and Balanced’ portion of his broadcast.
