Wednesday morning brought news that one of President Donald Trump’s earliest Congressional supporters, Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY), had been arrested on charges of insider trading. The pro-Trump congressman’s arrest was welcomed with loud cheers by a New Jersey audience who were watching a live MSNBC broadcast.
Sitting outside in a cafe setting in Somerville, New Jersey, MSNBC host Hallie Jackson announced the breaking news shortly after 10 AM ET after discussing the close Ohio special election with correspondent Garrett Haake.
“Congressman Chris Collins, the first member of Congress to back Donald Trump for president, has been arrested,” she reported.
As she continued breaking down the news of Collins turning himself in to federal authorities on insider trading charges surrounding a scheme to avoid major stock losses in a biotech company, the audience gathered outside her broadcast location could be heard whooping it up.
Below is some background of the indictment, via The Washington Post:
The congressman illegally shared bad news about a drug trial the company had been anticipating with his son before it was announced publicly, according to prosecutors. [Collins’ son] Cameron Collins traded on the information and passed the news along to Zarsky. The trades allowed Cameron Collins and Zarsky to avoid $768,000 in losses, according to the indictment.
