Bill Maher talked about guns and police violence on Real Time yet again last night following the protests and state of emergency in Charlotte, North Carolina. In a discussion with his panel of guests, Maher wondered why gun rights only seem to apply to white people.
“We apparently live in this country where it’s open carry really just for white people,” he said. “Also by the way, it’s ‘open angry’ just for white people. When you talk to the Trump people, they’re angry. And then the media, they talk about that like it’s a virtue. But black people can’t be angry.”
Maher said that police officers don’t have to shoot everyone with a gun just because something makes them nervous. “We have to train our police to not be that guy who just empties the clip,” Maher said. Maher was referring to the recent police shooting of an unarmed African-American, Terence Crutcher. Police claimed Crutcher was not co-operating despite having his hands in the air.
Maher also pointed out that police training is inadequate. He said that police officers like the one who shot Crutcher were victims because they are poorly trained. “She’s a victim of bad police training,” he said. “Police do not train the way they should. If you’re that nervous, you can’t do this job.”
