Fox News’ Mollie Hemingway Can’t Decide Whether Comey’s Memos Reveal Nothing Or Huge Setup
Late last week, following the release of former FBI Director James Comey’s memos, Federalist senior editor and Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway wrote that the memos revealed an elaborate trap that the ex-FBI chief laid for Donald Trump. What was the setup? Let Mollie tell you in her own words:
“Newly released memos written by former FBI director James Comey indicate that an early 2017 briefing for then-President-elect Donald Trump about the contents of an infamous dossier was held so it could be leaked to media outlets eager to report on the dossier’s allegations. In multiple memos, Comey specifically mentioned that CNN had the dossier and wanted a “news hook” that would enable the network to report on its most salacious allegations even though they had not been verified.”
The way Hemingway explained it in her piece, CNN was champing at the bit to report on the Steele dossier and the salacious details of the pee tape, but really needed for then-President-elect Trump to be briefed on its existence. Now, nevermind that both President Barack Obama and Congress had already been briefed on the dossier. In Hemingway’s theory, CNN needed Trump to be told about it before running with the story, and Comey would be the man who would take care of that for them and leak all the details after he talked to Trump.
New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait has already written about why Hemingway’s argument doesn’t hold water and is, basically, just plain silly. But for Hemingway, it doesn’t really matter because she has SO many theories regarding the Comey memos to flip in and out, depending on the setting.
Appearing on Fox News’ MediaBuzz this morning, Hemingway declared that the big takeaway from the memos was that there was no there there. And that is what’s the real big news.

“The fact that there was nothing in these memos is actually the most important thing, because they were selectively leaked to launch a special counsel,” she told host Howard Kurtz. “That there was nothing in there justify the special counsel, is huge news.”
Hemingway, who has seamlessly transitioned from anti-anti-Trump skeptic to full-on Trump sycophant in recent months, followed that up by highlighting her Comey/pee tape/CNN angle. And to finish up her thought, she explained that the reason Trump was demanding loyalty from Comey was Trump knew his intelligence chiefs were leaking against him.
So, just to recap here. Mollie Hemingway says that the memos show nothing. But they also prove that Comey briefed Trump on the Steele dossier in order to give CNN a hook to report on the golden showers thing. And, on top of all that, Comey’s claims that Trump asked for loyalty was really only the president sniffing out that Comey was a leaker.
Get it? Got it. Good.
