There’s One Glass Ceiling Hillary Clinton Won’t Break On Election Night
Hillary Clinton has spent her entire life trying to break through the proverbial glass ceiling. The old phrase refers to the barrier women face in achieving high office and success usually reserved for men. As Clinton is ahead going into the last two weeks of the election. the Clinton campaign has decided to make a symbolic statement.
Clinton plans to spend election night under a real glass ceiling. Clinton and her campaign staff will watch the results on November 8th in New York at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The Manhattan venue has an actual glass ceiling. The choice to hold Clinton’s election night event at the Javits Convention Center is an obvious nod to her attempt to break the biggest glass ceiling in American politics.
The Donald Trump campaign will also spend election night in New York but the venue has not yet been disclosed. Wherever Trump chooses to watch the results come in, it is unlikely his choice will match the symbolism of Clinton awaiting the outcome under a literal glass ceiling.
A new Clinton ad featuring Michelle Obama takes on the issue of gender directly. The ad shows women who have achieved important firsts in American politics, including Sandra Day O’Connor, the first women on the US Supreme Court and Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman to seek the presidential nomination of a major party.
Though Clinton has personally downplayed her gender throughout the election, her victory would be historic. No woman has ever run as a major party candidate in a presidential election and no woman has ever held the presidency or vice presidency.
