Trump Threatens to Send Federal Law Enforcement to Democrat-Led Cities
President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to send federal officers into several cities controlled by Democrats as he escalated his rhetoric about violence across the country. Trump’s threats have been dismissed as a ploy as he struggles in the polls.
Trump mentioned New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore and Oakland as places where federal law enforcement might be deployed. These cities have been singled out by the President and his allies as they’ve pushed false claims about lawlessness.
“We’re sending law enforcement,” Trump said. “We can’t let this happen to the cities.”
The President talked about Chicago, which suffered a wave of shootings, some fatal, over the weekend and used this to attack former Vice President Joe Biden.
“And you add it up over the summer – this is worse than Afghanistan, by far,” Trump said.
“This is worse than anything anyone has ever seen. All run by the same liberal Democrats. And you know what? If Biden got in, that would be true for the country. The whole country would go to hell. And we’re not going to let it go to hell.”
Republicans are trying to conflate local crime with protests following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent mass demonstrations for Black Lives Matter. Trump is widely expected to paint himself as the ‘law and order’ candidate in November.
