New Poll: Large Majority of Americans Disapprove of Trump on Coronavirus and Race
President Donald Trump’s approval rating on Coronavirus and race have cratered, according to a new poll from ABC News. Clear majorities of Americans now disapprove of the President’s handling of both of the major issues currently facing the nation.
According to the ABC News/Ipsos poll, 67% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of race relations, while 67% also disapprove of his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. These numbers represent an increase in disapproval on both issues.
As ABC News notes: “In the last month, Trump’s approval dipped to a range between the high 30s and low 40s, as the U.S. saw a resurgence of coronavirus cases, particularly across the south and west.”
There’s also bad news for the President across key voter groups, with his approval among independents falling to just 26% compared to 4o% in mid-June – a decline that could spell trouble for Trump’s reelection efforts.
Disapproval among independents has now risen to 73%, while men and women disapprove of the President on both issues almost equally, at 66% and 67% respectively. This is a significant rise for male voters, up from just 54% in June.
“Even white Americans without a college degree, considered to be a core constituency of Trump’s base, are split in their approval of the president’s handling,” ABC reports. “With 50% disapproving and 49% approving, compared to 42% disapproving and 57% approving in that last poll.”
The new poll is significant in that it seems to show the vast majority of voters united in their view of the President’s approach to race and the pandemic. However, its findings are in line with much recent polling, showing Trump’s numbers getting increasingly worse.
