MSNBC’s John Heilemann Suggests Trump Is ‘Trying to Throw an Election’, Could Drop Out of the Race
On Friday’s edition of Morning Joe, the hosts and guests speculated several times about President Donald Trump dropping out of the presidential race if it looks like he’s going to lose. Their discussions were based on an anonymous White House source and Trump’s recent attitude.
Host Joe Scarborough has already suggested that Trump doesn’t act like someone who wants to win. That, combined with recent disastrous polling, prompted theorizing about the President’s commitment to the race.
MSNBC’s John Heilemann offered his analysis of the state of the campaign.
“It’s possible — I’m not saying Donald Trump can’t turn it around,” Heilemann said.
“I’m not saying it’s impossible. I’ll never say that, never. But I will say right now we have a comprehensive, thorough, incredible picture of a national and battleground state electorate that has rejected Donald Trump and this is the month where that the reality has set in for everyone it seems like except Donald Trump.”
“I think he’s not just lost touch with his base and lost touch with the political reality, he seems to have lost touch with reality full stop. And I go to a comment you made at the top at 6:00. It does raise questions, I think.”
“And again, no-one’s gonna say that this is true, no-one’s gonna predict that he’s gonna drop out of the race, but it raises a fundamental question, does he actually want to win? Because everything he is doing – everything he is doing – is what you would do if you were trying to throw an election.”
“No. He’s not acting like a man who wants to win,” Scarborough agreed.
