Trump Suggested ‘Miracle’ Might Make the Coronavirus ‘Disappear’
As cases of the Coronavirus mount across the world, with new diagnoses almost every day, President Donald Trump reportedly thinks the whole thing might just go away. Trump’s response to the outbreak has already garnered criticism and comments he made on Thursday won’t boost confidence.
“It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear,” Trump said at the White House.
Trump said that the disease could ‘get worse before it gets better’ but that Coronavirus could ‘maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.’
These remarks reinforce the impression that Trump is ill-prepared to lead the response to crisis like this. While the disease has not yet reached pandemic levels, many governments are taking measures to contain it. The Trump administration seems poorly equipped to handle the situation.
Vice President Mike Pence has been put in charge of efforts to fight the virus, a move that caused alarm because of Pence’s record as a science denier and the HIV outbreak that took place in Indiana when he was governor. Pence’s reluctance to take recommended measures at the time is widely blamed for the spread of the illness.
Meanwhile, more evidence emerged that the administration isn’t handling Coronavirus correctly. Health officials met some Americans who’d been evacuated from the Chinese province of Wuhan – where the virus originated – without proper training or protective gear.
