Trump Re-Tweets Videos From British Far-Right Commentator Defending ‘Send Her Back’
The President of the United States has had a busy so far on Twitter. This Saturday, President Donald Trump retweeted a series of tweets from British far-right commentator Katie Hopkins. Trump has retweeted Hopkins before, but today’s tweets were defending his suggestion that Democratic congresswoman go back to their supposed countries of origin.
Hopkins is, if anything, more openly racist and anti-Islam than the President and has for years used columns in UK newspapers, TV appearances and social media to denounce immigration, promote the white genocide conspiracy theory and attack members of ethnic minorities.
The tweets in question include videos of Hopkins defending Trump’s new ‘Send her back!’ rhetoric and contain messages like: “The @realDonaldTrump has made #2020 a bold and binary decision. Are you going to choose socialists, choose ISIS, choose the Palestinian flag, choose Cair? Or are you going to choose to Make America Great Again? Choose @realDonaldTrump.”
Though Trump attempted to walk back the ‘Send her back!’ chant at a recent rally, he then appeared to walk back the walk back. On Saturday he tried to have it both ways, retweeting Hopkins’ defenses of him while saying he disapproved of the chants.
“As you can see, I did nothing to lead people on, nor was I particularly happy with their chant. Just a very big and patriotic crowd. They love the USA!” Trump wrote about a video Hopkins had shared of the rally. However, Hopkins’ tweet suggested ‘Send her back!’ should be his 2020 campaign slogan.
The President is apparently trying to have things both ways. He wants to embrace those who love his ‘Send her back!’ rhetoric while distancing himself from the obviously racist content of the chants. Retweeting Hopkins only confirms that he feels no regret for starting this chain of events in the firs place.
