Trump Advisers Want To Run ‘Dignified’ Re-Election Campaign, Avoid Rallies Until Next Summer
President Donald Trump’s advisers want him to lay off the rallies until at least summer, 2020, according to a new report from Politico. Trump’s team want him to focus on a more dignified kind of presidential campaign, emphasizing his role as commander-in-chief.
The President’s Republican allies want him to concentrate on looking presidential over the next year by showing him at work in formal settings like the Oval Office, the Rose Garden and the White House generally. They believe Trump’s unpopularity stems from his un-presidential appearance.
This strategy would reportedly include only leaving the White House for formal events, not travelling to stage rallies. This would be difficult for Trump, who thrives on the adulation of the crowd and seems to enjoy campaigning more than governing.
The re-election plan will also see a change in Trump’s Twitter activity. According to Politico: “That means fewer tweets targeting his 2020 opponents; leaving the White House only for events that promote specific presidential issues; and an intense focus on courting high-dollar donors behind closed doors.”
Campaign rallies would resume in the summer of 2020, when there will be a clearer indication of who the Democratic candidate will be. This plan runs contrary to recent stories that Trump was workshopping nicknames for Democratic presidential hopefuls as part of a strategy who used to attack Republicans in 2016.
Can President Trump act presidential and stay away from Twitter? That seems like a high risk strategy for a president who is as unpopular as he is. Previous presidents have tried to use the majesty of their office to secure re-election, but to no avail.
