One Day After CNN’s Bomb Scare, Trump Tells Media To ‘Clean Up Its Act’
President Donald Trump has attacked the media on Twitter one day after CNN’s offices were evacuated because of a suspicious package. The package contained a pipe bomb. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were also sent pipe bombs, while other prominent Trump critics received suspicious packages.
“A very big part of the Anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News. It has gotten so bad and hateful that it is beyond description. Mainstream Media must clean up its act, FAST!” Trump tweeted.
Trump did not issue a formal statement about the suspicious packages sent to several of his critics. Instead, he re-tweeted a statement from Vice President Mike Pence. Trump has not mentioned the bomb scare at CNN, but he has continued his attacks on the media.
Today, an identical suspicious package was sent to a restaurant owned by Robert De Niro. The actor is also a critic of the President. Earlier this year, he gave a speech at the Tony awards where he denounced Trump. “It’s no longer ‘down with Trump,’ it’s ‘fuck Trump,'” De Niro said.
Media and political commentators have already linked Trump’s rhetoric to the packages. Trump has repeatedly spoken in violent terms about his opponents and particularly the media. Others targeted by suspect packages include Democrats Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Maxine Waters, and former CIA Director John Brennan. All have publicly criticized Trump or are associated with opposition to him. Another package was reportedly sent to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
In an earlier tweet today, Trump denied reports that he uses private phones and that the Russians and Chinese listen in on his conversations on those phones. This denial is despite the fact that the New York Times cites Trump aides who have repeatedly warned the President not to use his own phones.
“The so-called experts on Trump over at the New York Times wrote a long and boring article on my cellphone usage that is so incorrect I do not have time here to correct it. I only use Government Phones, and have only one seldom used government cell phone. Story is soooo wrong!” Trump wrote.
