Former CIA Officer Says Trump Is ‘Very Smart’ on Russia: ‘We’re Frenemies’
A former CIA officer has told Fox News that President Donald Trump’s approach to foreign policy is working and suggested that the United States and Russia could become ‘frenemies’ thanks to Trump’s policies. Bryan Dean Wright spoke to Fox & Friends about international threats on Thursday.
“Well, we have to remember that we have a neurotic kid who’s at the head of a nuclear-armed state,” Wright said, referring to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
“So the threat is real. Even though it didn’t happen yesterday, it certainly could happen today and in the days to come. So if I were to sit down with the President and give him counsel, it would be continue with the diplomatic efforts. We have to focus on that kind of a solution. And we also have to start exploring covert action operations.”
Wright went on to discuss Russia. President Trump has been widely criticized for his relationship with Vladimir Putin, but Wright made no mention of this or Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Instead, the segment focused on hypersonic weapons and offered praise for Trump.
“I think what the President’s doing, very smartly, and the military’s doing very thoughtfully, is we’re moving forward aggressively on developing our own system, looking at space-based sensors to detect those launches, should they happen.”
“But I think, ultimately, this is a diplomatic question, and I think the President is very smart to try to engage and work with Vladimir Putin to try to find a – basically try to find a way to keep our relationship adversarial, sure, but at a low boil, right? We’re frenemies, I suppose one could say.”
