Ahead of Impeachment Vote, Fox News Poll Shows Half of Americans Want Trump Removed
The House of Representatives is due to vote this week on two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The President has tried to claim that the move against him is unpopular but a new poll from Fox News shows support for impeachment is steady.
Half of voters want Trump impeached and removed from office, while another 4% want him impeached but not removed. Another 41% are opposed to impeachment altogether – a figure that chimes with the President’s long-time approval ratings.
Importantly, the poll was conducted from 8 to 11 December – after Democrats’ introduced articles of impeachment against Trump. While this doesn’t seem to have moved the needle, it also means that support for Trump’s removal remains constant.
The Fox News poll found that 53% of voters believe Trump has abused his power, 48% said he had obstructed Congress and 45% said he had committed bribery. In one key finding, 60% of voters believe it is wrong for Trump to ask foreign leaders to investigate his political opponents.
Fox News has remained largely loyal to Trump but their polling is famously accurate and independent. That fact will make this poll even more of a concern for Trump and his defenders. While he has attacked Fox News polling in the past, the persistent numbers on impeachment could worry some Republican senators.
