MSNBC Bests Fox News In Primetime Demo Monday, Maddow Most-Watched In Cable News
MSNBC boasted the top-rated program in cable news Monday while also besting its rival Fox News in the key 25-54 demographic during primetime. Meanwhile, Fox had three of the top five most-watched programs of the day when it came to total viewership.
According to Nielsen, MSNBC averaged 481,000 demo viewers and 2.595 million viewers overall during the 8 PM to 11 PM primetime hours. Fox News attracted a total audience of 2.755 million total viewers and 436,000 in the demographic. CNN pulled in a total audience of 1.163 million and 337,000 in the key demo. It should also be pointed out that this was the first night of Monday Night Football this year.
In the daytime 9 AM to 5 PM slot, Fox News led across the board with 294,000 demo viewers and 1.500 million viewers overall. CNN averaged 195,000 demographic viewers and a total viewership of 823,000. MSNBC captured a total audience of 1.164 million and 188,000 in the 25-54 demo.
During total day, Fox News took first in the demo (280,000) and total audience (1.505 million). MSNBC averaged 1.283 million total viewers and 224,000 in the 25-54 metric. CNN grabbed 208,000 demo viewers and 755,000 viewers overall.
MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show led cable news in both the demo (617,000) and total viewership (3.146 million). Maddow’s 9 PM competitor, Hannity, placed second in total viewers (2.951 million) and third in the key demo (456,000).
MSNBC’s The Last Word finished second in the demographic (485,000) and fourth in total audience (2.737 million). Fox’s Tucker Carlson Tonight took fourth in the key demo (450,000) and third in total viewership (2.741 million).
The top-rated CNN program was Cuomo Prime Time, which drew 1.261 million total viewers and 367,000 in the demographic.
Weekly ratings also came in on Tuesday and Fox Business continues its winning streak over CNBS when it comes to business network viewership. During business day, Fox Business averaged 186,000 total viewers compared to 159,000 for CNBC. Meanwhile, CNBS edged FBN in business day demo viewership, 27,000 to 24,000. Fox Biz’s Lou Dobbs Tonight was once again the most-watched business news program, averaging 321,000 total viewers.
