Newt Gingrich: ‘The Person Whose Situation Is Most Like President Trump’s Was Abraham Lincoln’
This is the kind of thing that happens when you put two of the president’s biggest boosters together.
During Monday night’s Hannity, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was asked by host Sean Hannity if he ever knew of a “bigger abuse in history” than what is happening to President Donald Trump as it relates to the Russia probe.
“Look, I think the person whose situation is the most like President Trump’s was Abraham Lincoln,” Gingrich replied with a straight face.
The one-time Republican presidential candidate and former Trump campaign advisor went on to make his case on why Trump and Lincoln faced similar problems.
“Lincoln is fighting to preserve the Constitution, he’s fighting to preserve the Union, and he’s having to do a lot of different things that are very bold and in some cases very radical,” Gingrich stated. “And he is trying to do it in a way that he’s deeply, bitterly opposed, not just by the slave-owning South, but also by a substantial number of Democrats in the North, and I think that Trump’s in a very similar place.”
Somehow, Gingrich was able to bring Benghazi into the equation shortly after before claiming this shows that Obama-era national security officials are all untrustworthy because everyone in the previous administration lied about Benghazi. Or something like that.
