John Oliver On Election 2016: Death Would Be A Sweet, Sweet Relief
John Oliver opened Last Week Tonight last night by explaining how he hadn’t planned to talk about the presidential election at all. The show had prepared stories about Iceland, Spain and even a funny YouTube video. But Oliver reluctantly turned his attention to the FBI’s new probe into Hillary Clinton’s emails.
Oliver showed news clips reporting the FBI’s decision to look into Clinton’s emails again. “That’s just what this election and everyone’s state of mind needed,” Oliver said. “Bacardi should really consider switching their slogan to ‘Bacardi: Because there might be more fucking Clinton emails.”
“If this shitty development in a shitty campaign season were not grim enough, there is also the matter of where this latest problem came from,” Oliver said. Oliver mocked former congressman Anthony Weiner for his involvement in the case.
“Anthony Weiner is forcing the nation to re-litigate the entire email controversy and putting Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning the presidency in serious danger – Carlos Danger.” Oliver showed a clip of Vice-President Joe Biden’s reaction to hearing Weiner was involved.
“A month ago, when Donald Trump tweeted we should check out a sex tape of a former Miss Universe contestant, I said if you looked up, you would see rock bottom,” Oliver said. “Well, if you look up now, you will see absolutely nothing and I’ll tell you why. We have buried through not just rock bottom but through the core of the Earth and we’ve come bursting out the other side, startling kangaroos and we’re currently hurtling toward outer space where this is no up, down, light or darkness, just an endless void in which death comes as sweet, sweet relief.”
