Adam Schiff: ‘Any Effort’ By Pompeo or Trump to ‘Interfere’ Will be ‘Considered as Evidence of Obstruction’

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff has said that any attempt to interfere with Congress’ impeachment inquiry will be considered obstruction. Speaking at a join press conference with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat addressed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s apparent attempt to prevent State Department officials testifying.

“Any effort by [Secretary of State Pompeo] or by the President or anyone else to interfere with the Congress’ ability to call before it relevant witnesses will be considered as evidence of obstruction,” Schiff said at what was an otherwise largely uneventful press conference.

Schiff’s comments come as the State Department Inspector General sought an urgent meeting with congressional committees on Wednesday. The topic of the meeting has not yet been disclosed.

President Donald Trump was watching the live press conference and tweeting about it. Unsurprisingly, he was critical of Schiff and Pelosi and again argued that House Democrats should not be trying to impeach him.

“All of this impeachment nonsense, which is going nowhere, is driving the Stock Market, and your 401K’s, down. But that is exactly what the Democrats want to do. They are willing to hurt the Country, with only the 2020 Election in mind!” Trump tweeted.

He also took time to demean Schiff and praise Pompeo, who may come into direct conflict if the Secretary of State tries to prevent witnesses appearing before congressional committees.
