CNN’s John Berman Corrects Rick Santorum: The Democrats ‘Are Not Calling For Open Borders’
Over the past few days, President Donald Trump has been whipping up conspiratorial fear over the migrant caravans making their way to the southern American border in the hopes of finding asylum, hoping to make it a big election issue heading into the midterms. With the president accusing Democrats of supporting “open borders” and encouraging migrants to flood into the country, conservative pundits have parroted his language.
One such pundit, however, was called out for mindlessly tossing out the talking point this morning.
Appearing on New Day, CNN political commentator Rick Santorum reacted to Trump claiming the caravans were “an onslaught brought by the Democrats” by saying he thinks “what he is saying is the Democrats are out there calling for open borders.”
“They are not calling for open borders,” host John Berman shot back, causing Santorum to reply that “they are” because a guest on a CNN show last night said those arriving at the border should have an opportunity to enter the country.
After Berman pointed out that he hasn’t heard any Democrat campaign on open borders, Santorum stated that they won’t openly say “open borders” but instead will say they need to be compassionate. This led Berman to ask Santorum whether or not he wanted to be compassionate before once against noting that there are no Democrats campaigning on open borders.
“Open borders is not a real thing because nobody is calling for open borders,” the CNN anchor added.
