Donald Trump’s visit to an African-American church in Detroit has already been called blatant pandering but Seth Meyers took the criticism even further last night. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, the comedian attacked Trump’s attempts to look cool in an effort to win black voters.
Discussing Trump’s difficulty with African-American voters, Meyers said “But he’s hoping he can overcome all that by going to a black church in Detroit, and awkwardly swaying back and forth like a dad who brought his kids to a Demi Lovato concert.”
Meyers showed footage of Trump dancing and criticized him for avoiding his former promotion of ‘birtherism’. Trump was a strong advocate of the conspiracy theory that Obama was not born in the US. The birther movement is regarded as racist by many African-Americans.
Following his visit to Detroit, Trump sent a tweet encouraging black voters to ‘vote ‘T’. Trump is fond of giving his opponents derogatory nicknames but this is the first time he’s given one to himself. This was too much for Meyers, who thought Trump was desperately trying to look cool.
‘T’? Is he trying to give himself a nickname to appeal to black voters? Come November 8th, vote D. Trizzy, or maybe A$AP Donald, or my personal favorite, Donye Worst.”
