If there is one thing I’ve learned from consuming endless hours of conservative media, it is that most of those employed in the right-wing outrage machine lack any sense of self-awareness.
We were given a clear and concise example of this Tuesday, shortly after FBI Director James Comey announced that he was not recommending charges against Hillary Clinton regarding her use of a private email server. During the broadcast of Fox News’ Outnumbered, panelist Meghan McCain complained that Clinton’s relationship with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was the sole reason why she wasn’t facing an indictment.
“People are so jaded right now,” McCain opined. “Especially young millennials after the end of Bernie Sanders’ campaign. And it’s hard enough to sell why young people should be involved in politics and feel inspired when if you have enough money, if you’re powerful enough, if you have the right husband, you can do a lot of illegal stuff and you’re not going to get charged.”
“You’ll go to jail or you’ll lose your job,” she complained. “[But] if you’re Hillary Clinton — she can do whatever she wants! That’s what’s scary about this. She can do literally whatever she wants and she’s going to get away with it.”
Now, let’s just scan past the part where Meghan tries to relate to Bernie fans, since that is silly enough on its face. No, instead, let’s concentrate on where she talks about how one can seem to do whatever they want as long as they are related to someone famous, or are famous themselves.
Meghan McCain, as you likely know, is the daughter of current United States Senator and former GOP Presidential nominee John McCain. She’s been able to bounce around the media landscape (The Daily Beast, MSNBC, Fox News) and snag book deals largely on the basis of her last name. So, for her to sit there and cluck-cluck about Hillary’s relationship with her husband helping her out is really pretty rich, don’cha think?
