Over the past few weeks, retired neurosurgeon and Republican Presidential candidate Ben Carson has gotten quite a bit of media attention due mostly to his habit of saying unbelievably crazy shit. While the sleepy-eyed Carson has soft-peddled his special brand of sociopathy for years now, he’s decided to really step up his game recently. Whether it is stating that a Muslim should never be President or victim blaming those killed by a mass shooter or saying gun control was the reason the Nazis were able to kill so many Jews, Carson has remained in the center of the media spotlight as he’s been asked to clarify and explain his remarks.
Speaking to The Hill on Monday, the good doctor let it be known that he thinks the media in this country has a “deep liberal bias” and he is going to continue to make the same kind of comments that he’s always made. In his opinion, he’s said nothing inflammatory, and he doesn’t believe he needs to apologize for anything he’s said in recent weeks.
From the article:
“I want people to see me as an honest person, a person who is actually willing to express what they believe” Carson said. “The way I look at it, if people don’t like that, I’d rather not be in office. I don’t want to be in office under false pretenses, just saying things people want to hear so I can get elected.”
“I am not making inflammatory comments, although the media will try and turn it into inflammatory comments, but nothing that I’ve said is an inflammatory comment and that’s not the way that people see it,” Carson said.
On Friday, Carson lashed out at the press on their home turf, at the National Press Club in Washington, calling the news media “embarrassing” and vowing to “expose” its biases.
It’s an easy target for Carson. The media is reviled in conservative circles and Carson’s crusade could further raise his profile and endear him to a base that will be eager to defend him.
“We need the media to develop a conscience and start working for the people and stop having their own ideological agenda,” Carson said on Monday.
“I hope I didn’t give the impression that they’re all bad, but there’s a substantial majority that have an agenda,” he continued. “I’m still hopeful that the media will come to their senses … and step up to the plate with some real integrity. I haven’t given up on them. If I had, I wouldn’t say anything about them. It’s just like a child that you want to correct. If you don’t say anything, they become unruly.”
Why would Carson back off of his statements? Saying deeply offensive and insensitive shit in a soft voice is what is what is helping him in the polls. All of the recent national polls show Carson solidly in second place behind sentient circus peanut Donald Trump. The latest CBS News poll has Carson at 21%, just six points behind Trump and 12 points above Joe McCarthy impersonator Ted Cruz. The crazy is what appeals to the GOP base. It is what they crave. It is what they need.
So, what we will get is more weird comments from Carson, followed by him making the media rounds so he can criticize the media for being too liberal and unfair, all while he desperately soaks up as much attention as he can get. This will be followed by the also-rans deciding they need to step up their crazy to compete with Trump and Carson, and we’ll see Bobby Jindal or Lindsey Graham try some transparent stunt in an obvious attempt for attention.
Remember, we still have more than a year left of this shit.
