Fox’s Pete Hegseth: A Faithful Catholic Is ‘Sort of Offensive’ to Democrats
Fox News’ Pete Hegseth claimed on Saturday that a faithful Roman Catholic is effectively offensive to Democrats. Hegseth made the comments on Fox & Friends Saturday following reports that President Donald Trump will nominate Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.
Coney Barrett is a devout Catholic but it’s her position on abortion that has raised the most concern among Democrats and others. However, the President’s supporters have framed these concerns as an anti-religious bias – a theme Hegseth continued.
“You wonder just for one second, could the Democrats resist? Could they learn just a little bit from what they did to Kavanaugh and realize this close to an election if you go after someone like Amy Coney Barrett, ACB, who is a devout Catholic, who’s open about that…” Hegseth said.
“We have had other devout Catholics, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was Jewish. There should be, ought not be […] people have rejected the idea of a religious litmus test. Are we going to go down that road again? Can Democrats resist? Of course, they’ve removed God effectively from their platform. So someone who is a faithful Catholic is sort of offensive to them.”
The Democratic presidential nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, is a Catholic. The party’s last vice presidential candidate, Senator Tim Kaine, is a Catholic and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is a Catholic. The first Catholic ever elected to the presidency was a Democrat, John F. Kennedy.
