Fox’s Griff Jenkins: Police Are There to ‘Provide the Space’ for First Amendment Rights While Keeping Protesters ‘Safe’
Fox News’ Griff Jenkins offered an interesting interpretation of police reaction to the George Floyd protests on Friday. Jenkins seemed to suggest that law enforcement was providing ‘space’ for the exercise of the First Amendment – news that will surprise many who’ve seen footage from the past several days.
Jenkins spoke to Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy as the network’s flagship morning show continued to frame the protests as having been infiltrated by violent extremists. Despite the Trump administration’s assertions, this claim is questionable at best.
“This is important, he [Attorney General Bill Barr] said that the federal government has evidence that extremists, including Antifa, part of the agitation of all of this, and certain foreign actors have also hijacked these protests to push their agenda.”
“You know, Steve, I have been there and watched all this unfold,” Jenkins said.
“One of the things that is not talked about enough is what these officers, whether they are guardsmen or law enforcement. And, Steve, what they personally go through trying to keep the order.”
“Remember, they are there to provide the space for these protesters to exercise their First Amendment rights but ultimately keep them safe while doing it.”
Numerous videos and reports have emerged of law enforcement assaulting peaceful protesters, despite Jenkins claim that police are there to keep them safe.
