‘Morning Joe’: Sanders Defending Castro Is ‘Like Saying Mussolini Had the Trains Running’
Reaction to Senator Bernie Sanders defense of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro has become a major issue as he gains more and more traction in the Democratic presidential primaries. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough wasn’t impressed by Sanders’ comments on Tuesday.
Sanders spoke about the literacy program under the Castro regime but the Morning Joe host wasn’t impressed.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Scarborough said. “He had a literacy regime, but he also had a regime who tortured Catholics, tortured people who worshipped God in a way he didn’t like, tortured students that had newspapers, kept people locked up or years. Killed people.”
“You cannot talk about Fidel Castro’s literacy programs, you just can’t,” Scarborough said. “Not in American politics, and shouldn’t be able to without talking about the long laundry list of evils committed by Fidel Castro against his own people over decades. That is, yes it is, wait for it.”
“That’s like saying Mussolini had the trains running,” he said, referencing a common and inaccurate defense of the Fascist dictator of Italy.
