‘Morning Joe’: ‘Decadent’ and ‘Trumpist’ GOP Is Not the Republican Party Anymore
As the Republicans in the Senate appear poised to acquit President Donald Trump without hearing from witnesses, MSNBC’s Morning Joe lashed out at the current GOP for going to bat for Trump and argued that it is not the party it was just five years ago.
Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson and co-host Joe Scarborough agreed that the party had changed and had to be removed from office.
“John Bolton knows where the bodies are buried in this case, and Republicans don’t want to hear it,” Robinson said.
“Now, you know, am I surprised? No. I’m not surprised that it’s working out this way, and what it does is make the election in November that much more important. I mean, it’s not just important that Donald Trump be defeated. It’s important that the Republican Party, which is a decadent party, which is a Trumpist party, which is not the Republican Party that you joined years ago, and as you recall even from five years ago.”
“No, it’s not,” Scarborough agreed.
“It’s not the Republican Party that we knew, and it just needs to be — it needs to be removed from positions of authority and power,” Robinson added.
“By the way, I’m glad you said that, because a lot of people are saying, oh, this is the Republican Party. This is what the Republican Party’s always been. No, no it’s not,” Scarborough said.
“I mean, you look at the record deficits, you look at record debt. When I was there we balanced the budget four years in a row. We did a lot of good things that we promised to do. The deficits, the debt, the reckless spending, the radicalism. I mean, it has reached a fevered pitch under Donald Trump. There’s nothing about this party that is what it once was.”
