Fox News Guest Warns of ‘Hijacking the Electoral College’ with National Popular Vote
Fox & Friends went to bat for the electoral college on Tuesday after Senator Elizabeth Warren proposed abolishing it. The vagaries of the electoral college handed the White House to President Donald Trump even though he lost the popular vote, but Fox News guest Trent England argued that getting around the electoral college would be ‘hijacking’.
“What they are trying to do is get states to pledge to give away their electoral votes based on the national popular vote,” England said.
“People think you would have to amend the Constitution to get rid of the electoral college. But this basically does the same thing with only action in states. And there are almost 75% of the way to doing this, to hijacking the electoral college for a direct election.”
“It’s an end run around the electoral college, around the constitutional amendment process,” England went on.
“It’s an idea so dumb James Madison never worried about it. Nobody thought that states would give away their power based on sort of leftist direct democratic ideology. But that’s exactly what we see today.”
England went on to repeat the claim that some states would be completely ignored if the president were directly elected. However, these are little more than the same weak defenses that are usually offered for the electoral college – a system without comparison in other democracies.
