Fox News Host Softens Sean Spicer’s Habit of Lying to Public: ‘He Did Speak Some Untruths’
From the network that spent years complaining about President Obama’s “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor” comment comes a new take on public officials lying to the public. And it can be summed up in one word: Meh.
The public official in this case is former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, whose casting on the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars has some people, including the show’s host, fuming.
But Fox News’s Julie Banderas doesn’t see the big deal:
“Alright, he was doing his job and he did speak some untruths, but he is going out to dance and people are going to watch. I betcha they will.”
“Some untruths” is one way of describing the work of the spokesman for an administration that is notorious for lying even by the standards of politicians.
What Banderas misses — and guest Andrew Littman, a Democrat, fails to convey — is just how deeply blatant and out of the ordinary many people view the Trump administration’s lying. It is not just Spicer’s infamous rant about the size of the crowd at Trump’s inauguration. It is the stage that set for the rest of his term as press secretary, and that of his successor, who has admitted to flat-out lying to the American public.
All administrations spin facts to make them more acceptable to the public. This administration makes them up out of whole cloth so blatantly and then goes to such great lengths to defend them that it simply enrages people. That is why Sean Spicer is a divisive booking for DWTS in a way that an Obama administration press secretary would not be.
