Kathy Griffin Shreds Chris Cillizza During Samantha Bee Debate: ‘Shut The F*ck Up You Hack’
If you haven’t heard by now, Full Frontal host Samantha Bee absolutely tore into White House senior advisor and presidential daughter Ivanka Trump during her most recent broadcast. In a scathing monologue, Bee took aim at Ivanka for posting a photo of her and her daughter as reports resurfaced that the federal government had lost 1,500 migrant children.
“Ivanka Trump, who works at the White House, chose to post the second most oblivious tweet we’ve seen this week,” Bee exclaimed. “You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless cunt!”
Obviously, Bee’s comments drew immense outrage — especially from the right — and comparisons to Roseanne Barr’s recent racist and anti-Semitic tweets that led to the cancellation of Barr’s hit sitcom. Naturally, the White House has weighed in, calling for Samantha Bee’s show to be canceled in the wake of her inflammatory remarks about Ivanka.
Kathy Griffin, a comedian who previously saw her career negatively impacted after she posed with a mock severed head of the president, took to Twitter to defend Bee while condemning the White House for trying to force Bee out.
The White House Press Secretary is deciding what’s fit for broadcast or not. This is exactly what I was talking about in the thread I posted last night: https://t.co/U9GLtFpkwq#FecklessCunt pic.twitter.com/1OeEGxvWrj

This led to CNN editor-at-large and dispenser of tapioca political takes Chris Cillizza to jump in, stating that it wasn’t an issue of whether Bee should or shouldn’t say the word but whether we as a society should condone it.
This isn't about whether Samantha Bee CAN say it.
It's about whether she SHOULD say it.
And whether we as a society SHOULD condone it. https://t.co/egEshw5Ubv

Griffin obviously wasn’t in the mood for Cillizza’s Twitter lecture. Calling him a hack while telling him to “shut the fuck up,” Griffin noted that the press secretary calling for Bee’s show to be axed means “we’re heading into first amendment territory.”
Shut the fuck up you hack. When the White House Press Secretary, on behalf of the President, says “Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast..” we’re heading into first amendment territory.
That I have to explain this to you reminds me how dumb you are. https://t.co/UGAOapDVG8

Cillizza responded in the most Cillizza way possible.
Name-calling is pointless.
The debate over how we should treat each other is not. https://t.co/h8PNTvNM9x

Griffin came back by declaring the CNN analyst had tweeted “something insanely dumb” before stating that the whole thing is about the White House using its power to “get someone’s show canceled.”
Uh no Chris you tweeted something insanely dumb. You said that this isn’t about whether @iamsambee can say something…it is. When the White House uses its power to get someone’s show cancelled that’s when we get into that territory. https://t.co/1txFJZpcRU

The comedian also quote-tweeted a thread showing Cillizza fawning over Ivanka in the past, calling him a “sad, pathetic man.”

Shortly after these two got into it, Bee released a statement apologizing to Ivanka Trump and calling her remarks “inappropriate and inexcusable.”
I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.
