Cuomo Slams Trump’s ‘Reprehensible, Dumb Comment’ about 75-Year-Old Peace Activist
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was ‘disgusted’ with President Donald Trump on Tuesday after the President shared an unfounded conspiracy theory about 75-year-old peace activist Martin Gugino. Gugino is in hospital and two police officers have been charged with his assault.
Trump tweeted on Monday suggesting Gugino, who is a longtime peace campaigner and Roman Catholic activist, was actually an ‘Antifa provocateur’ who faked his fall. This idea came directly from pro-Trump outlet OANN and could be part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
“He accused this man of being associated with Antifa – no proof whatsoever. No facts, just an assertion,” Governor Cuomo said at his daily press briefing, which he’s been doing since the Coronavirus hit New York.
“I mean, if there was ever a reprehensible, dumb comment, and from the president of the United States,” the Democrat went on.
“At this moment of anguish and anger what does he do? Pours gasoline on the fire.”
“He should apologize for that tweet,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo has often been critical of President Trump and especially over the course of the pandemic. His public rebukes have been effective because of his platform and led to some speculation about a possible future presidential bid, though that seems far-fetched at the moment.
