Michael Steele on Republicans Threatening Civil War: ‘What the Hell Is Wrong with These People?’

Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele took aim at Republicans and right-wing media figures threatening violence if President Trump is impeached and removed from office.

“I don’t know what the hell is wrong with these people,” Steele said Saturday on MSNBC’s AM Joy. “I think we just need to be straight up about it and just call them out.”

Steele referenced Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-LA) commenting on the House floor on Thursday that the impeachment inquiry is pushing the country toward a “civil war.”

“Americans have to push back on this and say, ‘No, this is not where we are going and this is not who we are.'” Steele said.

In September, President Trump posted a quote on Twitter from Evangelical pastor and radio host Robert Jeffress.

“If the Democrats are successful in removing the president from office,” Jeffress had said on Fox News, “it will cause a Civil War-like fracture in this nation from which our country will never heal.”

This kind of talk is irresponsible and harmful, Steele maintains.

“Come on, America. You are smarter and better than this,” he pleaded. “Get your head out of your … you-know-what, and focus on what’s happening here — the manipulation, the lying, the B.S. over Donald Trump. It’s not worth it. The country is better than this.”
