Trump Claims That He’s ‘Taken Care of Puerto Rico Better Than Any Man Ever’
Speaking to reporter Thursday afternoon as he prepared to leave for a rally in Michigan, President Trump claimed — with a straight face — that he’s “taken care of Puerto Rico better than any man ever.”
After it was reported that the president complained to Republican senators that he had given too much money to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria — a storm that resulted in thousands of deaths and devastated the island — the U.S. territory’s governor told CNN that “if the bully gets close, I’ll punch the bully.”
“It would be a mistake to confuse courtesy with courage,” Gov. Ricardo Rosselló.
Besides telling reporters that he’s taken great care of Puerto Rico, the president falsely claimed that he’s given the territory $91 billion, a number that takes into account future spending and 20-year estimates, not funds that have actually been allocated to Puerto Rico for actual disaster relief.
He went on to blame the Puerto Rican governor and San Juan mayor — both critics of his — of not spending the money wisely before boasting that he has a “great relationship” with the people of Puerto Rico and they “understand it.”
