American Christians are arguing about Donald Trump’s role in the Bible. Several Christian thinkers have discussed the idea that Trump’s rise is a sign that the end of the world is approaching. While theologians are divided on the issue, it is picking up traction online.
Christian news website The Christian Post explains that some American Christian thinkers believe Trump is specifically referred to in the Bible. There is a line in one English translation of 1 Thessalonians that refers to ‘the trump of God‘, though it means a trumpet sound.
One Christian author mentioned in the article, so-called historian David Montaigne, maintains that Trump could indeed be mentioned in biblical prophecy. Montaigne has written two books about the ‘end times’. Many American evangelical Christians believe that the world will end and Jesus Christ will return in their lifetime.
“I am not suggesting that Donald Trump absolutely *IS* the last trump,” Montaigne wrote online. “But since the LAST TRUMP is one of the most clear and final signs in end times prophecy, can we overlook the possibility that a presidential candidate named Trump is being used as a sign by God?”
Other Christian theologians have rejected the idea as an obvious misreading of the biblical text but there is a hard core of Evangelicals in the US, many of whom voted for Trump, who embrace ‘end times’ theology and may see God’s will in Trump’s election.
