Last Week Tonight was recorded before last night’s second presidential debate, so John Oliver had to stick to what had happened in the run up to the debate. Donald Trump’s 2005 comments about how he could ‘grab them by the pussy’ was obviously going to feature, but Oliver wanted to make sure everyone knew who to blame.
In his opening segment, Oliver recapped the week’s controversy and then showed a series of Republicans denouncing Trump. He wondered why so many of them felt the need to mention they had female relatives to justify their criticism. “What the fuck does that have to do with anything?” Oliver said. “You’re going through such an elaborate six degrees of separation exercise to arrive at someone with a Y-chromosome you can feel sorry for.”
Oliver then showed Senator John McCain’s two responses to Trump’s comments, pointing out that in McCain’s first statement he said that Trump ‘alone should suffer the consequences’. Oliver wasn’t letting McCain and the GOP off so easily.
“He alone does not bear the burden of his conduct,” Oliver said. “He alone did not make himself your party’s nominee. All of you have consistently supported him through some absolutely heinous shit.” Oliver listed Trump’s many controversial statements, from his initial ‘Mexican rapists’ statement to his proposed ban on Muslims entering the US and his recent claim that the exonerated Central Park Five are guilty.
“All of you still thought he should be president,” Oliver said. “So the only way you get to be shocked and outraged now is if you were cryogenically frozen until Friday afternoon and that Access Hollywood tape is he first thing you saw upon being re-animated. Anything less than that and this is on you, too.”
