Rudy Giuliani: Lester Holt Was ‘Totally Unethical’ For Fact-Checking Trump
The Trump campaign is already blaming last night’s debate moderator for being unfair to Donald Trump. Trump suggested last night that Holt was hostile to him and now Trump surrogate Rudy Giuliani has harshly criticized Holt for calling out Trump’s lies.
“The thing that’s wrong is Lester Holt said straight out: Stop-and-frisk is unconstitutional. Lester Holt is not a lawyer,” Giuliani told Fox and Friends. “He’s wrong. It was decided in 1959 by Earl Warren. It is still the law of the land.” The former mayor of New York also erroneously claimed that “every cop does stop-and-frisk in every part of America.”
“But I’m not gonna allow him to play lawyer and contradict our candidate,” Giuliani said. “And I’d like to know: When did a moderator become a fact-checker? And if you’re gonna be a fact-checker, you better darn be right.” Giuliani seemed to think Holt had to be a lawyer to have his facts straight. “I’m a lawyer. Am I angry about it? I thought after Candy Crowley we saw the last of it. What Holt did last night — if journalism has ethics, if it has ethics, he violated the rules of ethics. Now if you’re gonna interrupt and you’re gonna correct me in front of 100 million people, you better be right. He is dead wrong.”
Giuliani said Holt was ‘completely unprofessional’ and ‘totally unethical’ for fact-checking Trump. Separately, liberal commentators have criticized Holt for being too soft on the GOP candidate and not calling out more of the misrepresentations Trump made during the debate.
When you have a candidate with a pattern of throwing out complete lies, it would be unfair to the opposing candidate to allow those lies to stand without challenge. It’s too bad fact checking is necessary, but with Trump, it is absolutely essential.
