Trump’s Baffling New Campaign Slogan: Make Mexico Great Again Also

For reasons unknown, Donald Trump’s campaign surrogates are wearing hats that say ‘Make Mexico Great Again Also’. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Senator Jeff Sessions were both filmed wearing the hats at a Trump event. Viewers and social media users are deeply confused about this new slogan.

Trump has just returned from Mexico where he met with President Enrique Peña Nieto. He has been criticized for not mentioning that Mexico must pay for his proposed border wall, despite Peña Nieto saying he told Trump that the Mexican government would not pay.

The new hats and their apparently pro-Mexican slogan don’t seem to make any sense. Trump has consistently criticized Mexico’s government and Mexican immigrants. He just yesterday delivered a speech that doubled down on his anti-immigrant rhetoric and won the approval of white supremacists including former KKK grand wizard and Senate candidate David Duke.

So why are senior members of the Trump campaign now sporting a slogan about improving Mexico? In addition to attacking US immigration policy and dangerous immigrants, Trump praised Mexican-Americans contribution to the US. The new hats could be an attempt to reach out to Mexican-American voters, though this seems a bizarre way to do that.

Trump has repeatedly said Mexico must pay for the border wall. That would likely cost the country billions. He also wants to deport millions of Mexican immigrants. Such an influx of people would place huge pressures on the Mexican state. Trump also claims many of the Mexican immigrants in the US are rapists and criminals. Will Trump make Mexico great by sending it rapists and criminals?

The Trump campaign appears to want things both ways. Trump wants to take a hard line approach to illegal immigration while also pivoting to Hispanic voters. It remains unclear which member of the campaign thought ‘Make Mexico Great Again Also’ hats were a good idea, but since they appeared just after Trump returned from Mexico, they were obviously planned.
