Donald Trump has claimed the death of an African-American mother of four proves that he’ll win black votes in November. Nykea Aldridge was shot while pushing a baby in a stroller. She was apparently not the intended target. Aldridge is a cousin of Chicago Bulls player Dwyane Wade.
Trump tweeted about the killing, saying “Dwayne Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago. Just what I have been saying! African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!” Unfortunately, Trump managed to spell Wade’s name wrong.
The tweet has already been called crass and opportunistic. The Trump campaign is in the middle of an ‘outreach’ to African-American voters based largely on Trump’s claims that black voters live in poverty, have no education and live in conditions worse than war zones.
Trump misspelled the name of a prominent black athlete while trying to exploit his cousin’s death. That is unlikely to endear him to African-Americans who already overwhelmingly support Hillary Clinton. Trump commands just 1 percent of the black vote and his so-called pivot is not helping.
Dwyane Wade tweeted about the need to end ‘senseless gun violence’ though Trump has ignored the tweet. Trump’s insensitive tweet comes on the heels of revelations about his campaign CEO Steve Bannon’s potential antisemitic views. None of this will help Trump win crucial minority voters.
