Trump Tells Pennsylvania Senate: “Why Wouldn’t They Overturn an Election?”

President Donald Trump told the Pennsylvania state senate on Wednesday that he had won the presidential election in the state and nationwide. Trump spoke to a hearing over the phone and made unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud.

Trump’s personal lawyer and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani attended the hearing in person and held a phone up to a microphone so that the president could make his remarks. His comments came one day after Pennsylvania certified its election results.

“This was an election that we won easily. We won it by a lot,” Trump said. “This election was rigged […] we won all of these swing states by a lot.”

“Why wouldn’t they overturn an election?” Trump went on, claiming that there was evidence of voter fraud in several states. Despite the Trump campaign’s ongoing claims about fraud and so far unsuccessful lawsuits, no evidence of irregularities have emerged.

“This election was lost by the Democrats. They cheated,” Trump said. “It was a fraudulent election.”

There is no indication that Republican-controlled legislatures will attempt to overturn election results or that the law in individual states would allow them to do so. President-elect Joe Biden is proceeding with the presidential transition as courts have repeatedly sided against the Trump campaign.
