Donald Trump Could Be Banned from Twitter After He Leaves Office

President Donald Trump could potentially be banned from Twitter once he’s no longer in office, according to reports about the social media site’s intentions. During his presidency, Twitter has allowed Trump to violate its terms of service without acting against his account.

However, once he has left the White House, it appears Trump will again be subject to all the site’s rules, which could man suspension or a ban if he continues to use Twitter in the same way he has since the 2020 presidential election – spreading misinformation.

Trump’s favorite social media site has operated a tolerant policy toward him, allowing him to say things that would get other accounts banned. More recently, however, many of the president’s tweets about the election have been flagged.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told a congressional hearing on Tuesday that affording Trump special treatment will not survive the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20, 2021.

“If an account suddenly is not a world leader anymore, that particular policy goes away,” Dorsey said.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Twitter said: “A critical function of our service is providing a place where people can openly and publicly respond to their leaders and hold them accountable. With this in mind, there are certain cases where it may be in the public’s interest to have access to certain Tweets, even if they would otherwise be in violation of our rules.”

A suspension would likely raise Trump’s ire and result in more tweets directed at Twitter itself, but an outright ban would have a profound effect on his ability to communicate with his supporters. The president tweets almost daily but his continued unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud could cost him his account if his online behavior doesn’t change after he leaves office.
