‘Morning Joe’: If There’s a Blue Wave, Republicans Will Be Saying ‘Donald Who?’

Historian Jon Meacham and MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough discussed how Republicans would distance themselves from President Donald Trump if Democrats win in November. Speaking on Morning Joe, they agreed that if the GOP faces defeat, many Republicans will forget about Trump.

They were discussing the election in the context of the President’s car crash interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan.

“My bet is, sometime in the middle of November of this year because it’s going to take a while to count the ballots. Let’s not talk about election night,” Meacham said. “Let’s talk about election week. Let’s not set up a false expectation that we’re all gonna know everything and that David Brinkley ‘s gonna come back tell us everything at the right time because that plays into Trump’s hand, because chaos helps him.”

“But I suspect that if there is even a blue wave-ish, a wavelet, there’s gonna be a point before the end of the year where a lot of Republicans are gonna be saying Donald who? No, no, no, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t know who that is. And if they do, it’s gonna be because of that kind of clip.”

“That is exactly what’s gonna happen,” Scarborough said.

“I can tell you that a lot of the same people that are blindly defending Donald Trump right now were viciously attacking me when I was criticizing George W. Bush’s foreign policy in his second term and also criticizing his spending and huge deficits and and asking me why I was a socialist, why I was a left-winger, when I had become a left wing radical when I was actually attacking him because he’d abandoned all conservative concepts as far as I was concerned, which is why I was attacking him. And of course the second George W. Bush got out of office, they started saying the same thing.”

“And now the attacks, oh my God, you would think George W. Bush was a Socialist. The same thing will happen with Donald Trump. It’s the game they’ve been playing.”
