Trump Claims Beirut Explosion Was a Bomb – Contradicting Lebanese Government

President Donald Trump has claimed the explosion in Beirut on Tuesday wasn’t an accident but could have been a bomb. This directly contradicts the government of Lebanon, which has said the explosion was caused by improperly stored ammonium nitrate.

Trump told the press yesterday that he’d been told it wasn’t an accident. His comments came not long after the incident, which has killed 100 people and wounded about 4,000. These numbers could rise over the course of the week.

“This seems to be, according to [the generals], they would know better than I would, but they seem to think it was an attack,” Trump said. “It was a bomb of some kind.”

The Lebanese government said the incident was caused by an ‘unsecured’ shipment of ammonium nitrate that had been stored at the port for six years. Though the country experienced serious hardship during its civil war, yesterday’s explosion was apparently an accident.

“It was a real horror show. I haven’t seen anything like that since the days of the war,” one witness told the Press Association.

Lebanon has not yet responded to President Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that the explosion was caused by a bomb, but there is a significant time difference between Washington, D.C. and Beirut.
